Here are our most frequently asked questions:

Download Green Sheets that comes with the DSS NDVR System Version 5.7 - (Includes step by step instructions on how to backup/view &  ISP/Telco Modem/Router port forwarding information)

Q1. Can the DVR install on a NTFS hard drive as opposed to a FAT32 partition?

A. Yes, the only difference is the hard drive of your DVR cannot read in other PC. NTFS is designed to secure your data from unauthorized access. The recorded video data retrieved from an FAT32 hard drive and can be played in other (NTFS or FAT) PC.

Q2. Why do we need to install DirectX 9.0c

A. Many users forget to install this driver, causing the application to function abnormally. You can download DirectX from the following site: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.aspx

Q3. What kind of chipset-based motherboard does your DVR system support?

A. Currently only Intel chipset-based Motherboards are supported. Other chipsets, such as VIA, SiS and ALI, are not supported yet. Minimum requirements include: Pentium 4 1.8GHz or higher, and a minimum of 256MB system RAM. However, if you plan on running only 4 cameras per system, you can run the software on one of the newer VIA K8T800 chipset (at least 533MHz FSB) or one of the newer AMD based motherboard with the Athlon64+ processor

Q4. Do we recommend using the onboard VGA?

A. We do not recommended customers using onboard VGA, most motherboards with onboard VGA offer only 16MB onboard VGA memory or less. However, the newer Intel motherboard with built in Intel Extreme graphics adapter does support at least 64MB and you can configure your PC BIOS to share more memory with the on board VGA. The bottom line is if you plan on running at least 12 or 16 cameras (full resolution recording), it is recommended that you install either an AGP or PCI Express video adapter.

Q5. What kind of VGA cards have been tested?

A. ATI : Radeon 9000 / 9200 / 9550 / 9600 / 9700 / 9800 / X300 NVIDIA : GeForce4 FX / GeForce MX /GeForce FX 5200 / FX5500 / FX 5600/ FX 5900/ FX 6600 Please check the latest recommended hardware list on this site: http://www.CCTVBuyers.com

Q7. Do we have to manually remove the drivers after removing the NV software?

A. NV software Version 5.0.0069 or later automatically removes older drivers, allowing users to easily perform the upgrade action.

Q8. Why is my DVR live display output messed up?

A. Some VGA cards do not support full functional DirectX YUV hardware stretching capacity. Try changing the "Color Resolution" to either 16 or 32 bits in "Display Setting" to solve this problem.

Q10. Why does the message "The serial number you entered is invalid. Please enter the serial number again" appears when double-clicking the program shortcut?

A. Usually this phenomenon appears when the program is updated. This is caused by the invalidity of the old serial number. Simply get a upgrade serial number from the original distributor. This is caused by the user logging into Windows as an "Administrator" when he or she installed the program. Later the program cannot be accessed without enough authority if the user enters Windows as a regular user. To resolve the problem, simply log out the system and then log in as the "Administrator."

Q11. Will the previously recorded data be deleted when the program is updated?

A. No. All you need to do is remove the older version and install the new program into the same folder. The program will know where to pull the existing recorded data.

Q12. How do I identify the product name and version?

A. Press Ctrl+Alt+V simultaneously on the main screen (at the time of entering the user name and password after the program is started). A window will pop up, with the product name the version number.

Q13. Does the program automatically restart after power failure or improper shutdown? Do I need to reset the surveillance status back to the previous state before the incident?

A. If the computer is not shut down properly, the program will restore to the previous setting and surveillance state after the computer is restarted.

Q14. When just one camera is connected, at first on-screen display is normal then gradually the image is brightened until it becomes totally white. How do I resolve the problem?

A. Please disable the other channels which are not connected to any camera. If the problem remains after the other channels are disabled, check whether DirectX 9.0 or above is installed. This particular problem will be fixed in our upcoming release

Q15. How do I resolve the problem of blinking?

A. Adjust the Visual Signal strength of all cameras connected to the same card.

Q16. Why does the color camera invert to white and black after the program is started?

A. Please determine your video signal standard (NTSC for USA/Canada), and then set the video standard to the proper setting. Please click Setup --> System --> Video Standard --> PAL or NTSC.

Q17. What is the minimum capacity of free space needed for recycling? What are the rules to delete files?

A. The minimum capacity is "Number(s) of 878 chipset(s) x1G+500Mb". Take NV1000 for example, it should be 1(878 chipset) x1G +500mb=1.5G is the minimum capacity of free space. When recycling starts, the oldest files of each camera will be deleted in sequence from camera one to the last camera.

Q18. Can display and recording rate (frames per second) be adjusted?

A. Yes. There are five values to choose from. However, when the CPU usage is too high, the program will automatically adjust the rate(s) in order to have the program function normally.

Q19. Will the display and recording rate (frames) be affected when the camera resolution is set at 640x480 or 720x480?

A. Yes. When the camera is set at 640x480 or 720x480, causing higher CPU usage and great consumption of system resources, the program will automatically adjust these rate(s) to ensure steadiness of its performance.

Q20. With "UPS Support" enabled, why is UPS not functioning properly and no UPS product information is displayed?

A. The program gets the UPS product information from the operating system. If the program cannot get the UPS information, please have the user verify whether UPS software driver has been installed on Windows.

Q21. Why does the recording button not function after it is pressed?

A. Please remember that in the Camera setup page there are Display and Record check boxes. If the Record check box is not enabled, the recording operation will never function.

Q22. How do I setup the POS system version 5.1?

A. Please click here:

Q23. Why do users fail to control the Speed Dome while the image can be displayed normally?

A. There are a number of reasons to explain why Speed Dome cannot be controlled. The most common reason is the hardware (installation). Speed Dome communicates with PC through RS485. Usually Speed Dome has the R+ and R- port, and RS485 has the T+ and T- port. The R+ port must be connected to T+ port, and R- port connected to T- port. However, users often connect these ports in the opposite way, resulting in the failure to control Speed Dome. Next reason is Speed Domes ID problem. Our program can support up to 16 channels. Channel 1 controls the Speed Dome whose ID is set to 1; channel 2 controls the Speed Dome whose ID is set to 2, ¡K and channel 16 controls the Speed Dome whose ID is 16. Make sure users set IDs correctly. Then check the PCs COM port where the RS485 connects. Usually COM1 has been connected to other peripherals, so users should select COM2 as the COM port used by Speed Dome in the PTZ Camera setup page. Model problem. There are a variety of Speed Dome models in the market. Make sure users use and select the Speed Dome supported by the program.

Q24. Is it possible to connect multiple Speed Domes to the same ports but control them separately?

A. Our surveillance system can support this kind of connection, but you have to be careful with the Speed Dome configuration, especially the ID configuration, and these Speed Domes connected to the same ports can be of the different model.

Q25. Why is it difficult to record any sound when the Sensitivity slider is set to a higher value?

A. The definition of this setting means: the program will start recording sound only when the sound's volume is higher than the level set in Sensitivity. Therefore, the higher the sensitivity, the greater the volume needed to activate the audio recording. The lower the sensitivity, the lower the volume is necessary to activate the recording. Users should determine the sensitivity level based on his or her needs.

Q26. Why does audio recording not function?

A. If you have the NV3000, you need to purchase the 1-CH Audio Extension (NVD1AUEXT). If you have the NV5000, you need to purchase the 4-CH Audio Extension card (NVD4AUEXT)

Q27. What is the function performed in the masked area?

A. Mask is used to "neglect" the selected area "with no detection." For example, wind blowing on tree leaves, causing the surveillance system to judge that as a motion being detected and thus sets off the alarm. This is a waste of computer resources. To avoid this situation, users should use the Mask function to exclude any specific area from detection.

Q28. In the alarm setup screen, I can set the alarm to call out when it is triggered. Why only one alarm device performs call-out function and the other does not although both of them are triggered at the same time?

A. This is because one of the alarms is triggered repeatedly and results in the continuous modem call-out requests. You have to wait until the first alarm stops, and the system has finished all call-out requests; then after around 10-20 seconds, the system will begin to execute the other alarm call-out request.

Q29. Why does the e-mail feature not work?

A. Please check the "Send and Receive" function in Outlook. If it fails, then it is the problem of Mail Server. In addition, users must make sure to have all fields except "cc" completed in the Email Setting dialog box. Also check if your have any firewall or router that blocks port 25.

Q30. Why does it not work when I select multiple recipients?

A. When you select multiple recipients, remember using semicolon to separate e-mail addresses. Many users forget this.

Q31. Modem works normally, and the WAV format is correct, but no sound is heard when the telephone receiver is picked up?

A. First make sure the modem purchased is FULL-DUPLEX. Half-duplex modems are not supported. Then check the driver installation. Usually Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 automatically installs the driver for the modem when the computer is turned on. This causes the user to believe that the modem has been installed successfully. But the driver supplied by Windows is for HALF_DUPLEX modem only and will turn bi-directional feature to one way. Please make sure the user installs the driver supplied by the modem.

Q32. Why couldn't I connect remotely to the NV DVR(Webcam)?

A. Users often forget to press the "Network" button in the NV main screen. If it is not clicked, they cannot be connected to the server. If the server uses floating IP, it is necessary to check the current IP address and select the correct IP address in the Server IP dialog box. When either the server or client has Firewall, their port configurations must match the port configuration of the user's Firewall. On the firewall, please configure port forwarding for port 80, 8080, 5550, 5555, 9999 to the DVR server.

Q34. Why is there no data on my CD after performing the CD backup operation Version 5.0 - 5.5?

A. The NV software does not directly burn the backup data to CD. It copies the backup data to a folder on the hard disk, you need to burn the data manually onto the CD with a burning program such as NERO. If you have Windows XP Professional, you can simply drag and drop the whole backup folder onto your CDRW or DVDRW drive.

Q36. How to avoid misuse of the program or closing the program accidentally?

A. The program will ask for a password each time when you start/stop recording, start/stop network server or minimize the program.

Q37. How to make the playback smoother?

A. Increase your memory size, purchase a hard disk of higher rotational speed or with larger buffer, and use disk defragmenter regularly. Also do not put your recording drive on the same partition as your Operating system. Install another HDD for recording or repartition your system.

Q38. Why is it that some channels display images and the others do not when I drag the slider on the lower-left corner of the screen during playback?

A. When dragging the slider to certain point, the system will search for files of the specific time. If the system finds any files, it will immediately play these files; if not, only the base picture will be displayed on the screen.

Q39. Can we change the port numbers of WebCam and Remote Console server in the networking setup page?

A. The default port of WebCam is 80, and that of the Remote Console server is 8080 or 5550. Users can modify these default settings to meet their needs.

Q40. Why is it that I can connect to the DVR server from my web browser but when I press the 'Remote console' function nothing is displayed on the screen?

A. First check whether the TCP/IP connection is OK. You can use WebCam to test the connection status. If WebCam can display images, it probably means the Firewall of the server or client rejects the transmission request. Then check whether the Firewall of server side has assigned a port to DVR server. Please assign 8080 & 5550 port of Firewall to the DVR Server. This is the first possibility. Check whether the Firewall of the client has limited the user to connect to any Web site or would reject some unusual transmissions. If so, this Firewall will reject the Remote Console data transmission request as well.

Q41. Why IE shows "Failed connect to server" after I tried to connect to my DVR using domain name (http://***.dss.com.tw)?

A. There could be two cases: If your DVR has a real (or fixed) IP, please type this IP directly in the Address field. If this works, it means your DNS server, for some reasons, did not find our DDNS server (http://ddns.dss.com.tw). If this situation persists, you may go to your TCP/IP settings > DNS server IP (see below picture) to establish any of the following DNS server IP: DNS server: 204.127.198.4 or 206.14.125.10 or 216.148.108.194 These DNS IPs are of world major ISP. Changing your DNS server IP will not affect your access to Internet using IE or receiving e-mail. If your DVR does not have fixed IP (dial up service), please change your DNS server IP as described above.

Q42. Why is there no image being displayed after successfully connecting to the server through Internet Explorer?

A. First verify that the Firewall (on the NV server end) has assigned TCP ports 80, 8080, 5550, 5555 and 9999 to the DVR server.

Q43. Why does Remote Playback not work while both the connection to the server and the image display is normal?

A. Please check TCP/IP connection to verify that the server's Firewall has assigned 8080 & 5550 port to DVR server since the Remote Playback function needs to download files for viewing. If the server does not open 8080 & 5550 port, the file transmission using TCP/IP will be rejected. This is assuming that you already have port 80 being forwarded.

Q44. Under what condition will the following problem occur? - When Remote PC1 login to the 1st Server, the Remote PC1 immediately hang. But when Remote PC1 login to 2nd Server, this problem does not appear. - Additionally, no problem occurs when Remote PC2 login to the 1st and 2nd server PC. - all the PCs are using IE for remote monitoring purposes.

A. Please do the followings: -In Windows 2000 C:\WINNT\Downloaded Program Files\ -In Windows XP C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files\ Delete every "WebCamX Control" files in these files are installed when using IE to remote monitoring. Next time when Remote PC1 try to connect to every Server PC including the 1st Server PC, Remote PC1 will download the WebCamX Control again.

Q45. Why is the download performance of Remote Playback unsteady?

A. This is affected by the bandwidth. If you select all 16 channels and download 10-minute data for each channel, the file size will be so great that leads to slow transmission speed. But downloading these files in the LAN environment or using a T3 line is quite fast.

Q46. Why should we select the type of bandwidth (in Connecting Quality)?

A. If user's client side uses modem, but he or she selects T1 (LAN), then the client will give inaccurate bandwidth information to the DVR server and causes traffic jam, even inability to transmit images. Therefore, please select the appropriate bandwidth.

Q47. What is the reason when enabling the Direct Draw function, the cameras images look corrupted?

A. Please upgrade the graphic card's driver. It may be that the graphic card's driver does not support DirectDraw. Please upgrade to the latest version of the driver and if not resolved, reinstall DirectX 9.0c or above.

Not Enable Direct Draw Ver. 5.1

Enable Direct Draw Ver. 5.1

Q48. How do I setup remote access via a web browser if I have a DSL/Cable modem Router?

A. Please do the followings:

1. Setting a fixed virtual IP for your DVR server (Please contact your network administer for the IP address)

2. Entering the setting page of your Router.(see router's manual)

3. Map fixed IP or port to the virtual IP of DVR server.

4. Enabling the port required by DVR server as below: TCP port 80 / 8080 / 9999

  Answer

Please install the system by following the following steps:

1. Put the PCI card into the appropriate slot in the PC

2. Boot up your PC and install the application software while ignoring the windows auto detected hardware. *Note* Please do not install the driver by connecting to the internet because by doing so you will have installed the wrong driver (This is caused by the fact that windows pulled down the KWorld driver. If you have inadvertently installed the KWorld driver, please read FAQ on how to remove the KWorld driver before installing the DSS/NDVR Driver: http://www.CCTVBuyers.com/html/faqnv3K5K6K.html)

3. Reboot the PC after you have installed the application software and windows will then again detect new PCI cards in the system. Now proceed to install the driver by having windows automatically search from the local hard drive (DO NOT install the driver from the internet).

4. After this is all done, please go to the Windows device manager and make sure that under 'Sound Video and Game Controller' you see a bunch of DVR drivers with no yellow question mark next to it. If you encounter anything that says 'Video card' with a question or exclamation mark next to it, please right click on the item and proceed to manually install the driver from the local hard drive.

To activate Direct3D and DirectDraw (DirectX) follow the next steps:

2.Click OK.
3.Click on the Display tab, then click on the Enable button for DirectDraw and Direct3d.
4.Click Ok.

  Question

What ports do I need to open on my firewall to remotely access the NV server?

  Answer

There are three specific ports that you need to perform port forwarding via your firewall/router. First of all, check what they are set to by going to the NV software setup screen, under 'Network setting'. Under 'Server Configuration', look for 'Port' and 'Webcam Port' and under 'Voice phone' note the number under 'Port'. All 3 ports are TCP ports and they default to '80', '8080', '9999' respectively. Please read the question on how to configure port forwarding on some DSL based routers

  Question

How do I setup Port Forwarding to browse my DVR from a remote site if I have a DSL/Cable modem Router?

  Answer

For Netgear Routers, visit the following link:
http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101145.asp

For Linksys Routers, visit the following link:
http://www.dslwebserver.com/main/fr_index.html?/main/sbs-linksys-port-forwarding.html

For DLink Routers, visit the following link:

For Netopia Routers, visit the following link:
http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Netopia/Cayman3300/eMule.htm

Generally, these following steps are taken to setup the port forwarding.
**The instructions below assume that you have a relatively new router that has web-base configuration. There may be some variations from product to product, but the general steps are the same. For older models, please consult your router manual.

1. Type the router's address in an Internet browser's address bar. (By default the router's address is 192.168.0.1). **In the example picture below, we are using a pre-assigned IP for the router.
2. Enter the router's username and password. (By default the username is admin, password is password).
3. Under Advanced, click Port Forwarding on the left menu bar.
A Port Forwarding Screen (Varies Slightly by Router)

4. From the Service & Game (or Service Name) pull down, select the service that you will host. The services the router knows about are listed here. If the service does not appear in the drop down, add a service as described in the next section, then return to this step.
5. Enter the IP address of your local server in the Server IP Address box.
6. Click Add.
7. Click Logout to exit from router settings.

To Add a Service for These Routers
To define a service not in the Service Name list, determine what port numbers are used by the service.
1. Click Add Custom Service.
2. Enter the first port number in an unused
Start Port box.
3. If only one port number is to be forwarded, enter the same number in End Port. To specify a range of ports, enter the last port to be forwarded in the End Port box.
4. Enter any name you choose for the service.
5. Click Apply.

Here’s what our customers are saying...

This is the best thing I could’ve done to see what’s really happening at my store  while I’m away.
Thank you - Thank you - Thank you!

Greg, Pro Image

We are thrilled to be able to dial-in and see our back docking bay. It was one of our most vulnerable areas of product loss.

Sam H.,
Dolloar Store Wholesale

We installed an unobtrusive camera above our cash register. We now see a clear difference in monthly revenues.

Burt C,
Philly Connection

I do a lot of traveling... There is an alarm on the house where police are notified if an intruder is detected. But now I have an added peace of mind to know that I can simply dial-in and see the interior of my house. It was well worth the investment. I’m glad you found me.
